Like most national pizza chains, Pizza Hut has had its highs and lows in what has become an insanely competitive global pizza market.
The pizza chain is always working to bring greater relevance to its brand, whether through new product releases like the new Big Pizza Sliders, or to pique the interests of smart communicators steeped in social business to help them better articulate that relevance.
That’s why Pizza Hut will be at South By Southwest (SXSW) on Sunday March 10, welcoming any qualified candidates to interview for its currently vacant Social Media Manager of Greatness role (details at BecauseImGreat.com).
So what? Why should you care? Here’s why, and it’s pretty cutting edge.
The interviews will last just 140 seconds as in the hyper speed, think-on-your-feet social media space, Pizza Hut wants applicants who can actually demonstrate their credentials — not only in real time but in the time it takes to snap and share a twit pic (unless you’re a congressman from New York).
“It’s the modern day elevator speech,” said Doug Terfehr, Pizza Hut Director, Public Relations. “The time you have to tell a story, engage a customer or leave a lasting impression on someone socially has shrunk to seconds. We think our open position is one of the best jobs available for people who work in this space. Few industries are as fast-paced as QSR and few brands have as active of a social media presence as Pizza Hut. We can’t wait to meet some of the best and brightest at South by Southwest.”
Here’s my take: Corporate social media is a two pronged effort of brand engagement and customer service. On the brand engagement side, more often than not one of the biggest mistakes commonly seen from big companies like Pizza Hut is that they focus far too much on themselves, pushing content that is increasingly “me” focused and ignore the interests of those they are speaking with online. In the case of BecauseImGreat, Pizza Hut has turned that paradigm on its head, meeting prospective top-notch hires on their turf, in their tone.
Bottom line: Schwing!
Candidates are asked to bring nothing more than their smartphones and ID to the interview. If you’re wearing your hipster skinny jeans, unnecessary scarf, and thick black glasses — those will be allowed, more than likely. Also, Pizza Hut notes that those who are interested can officially apply for the position on the Pizza Hut careers page or during the interview process, which will include a review of each person’s LinkedIn profile live via mobile device. No paper resumes! Resumes on a pizza crust may be considered if delicious enough.
The official job description and responsibilities will be posted to the Pizza Hut career’s mobile site and the company will conduct a another round of interviews via Google+ on March 14, which you might recognize as 3.14 — National Pi Day.
Think you’ve got the chops to lead social strategy for the world’s biggest pizza chain? Well then, get to the Austin Hilton from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday, March 10 during SXSW. A Pizza Hut representative will be located in the main lobby of the hotel to direct you.
